The first doses of COVID-19 vaccine have arrived in Ohio. Yesterday and today, Ohioans heard from some of Ohio’s healthcare workers who were among the first to receive the vaccination. The initial COVID-19 vaccine to reach Ohio is the Pfizer vaccine that shipped to pre-positioned hospitals over the weekend. Ohio will also begin vaccination in 5-10 nursing homes this Friday, Dec. 18. Vaccination of nursing home residents and staff will primarily be done through a federal partnership with CVS, Walgreens and some select pharmacies. Ohio expects to continue to receive vaccine on a weekly basis moving forward.
In Union County, we expect to receive initial doses of vaccine as early as next week (week of Dec. 21-27), with additional doses coming weekly thereafter. These early doses will go to hospital systems for their healthcare workers and to local health departments. Local health departments will be charged with distributing vaccination to individuals in the 1a priority group outside the hospital systems and nursing homes (EMS, persons with mental illness or intellectual disabilities living in group homes and staff of these facilities, non-hospital healthcare workers with direct patient care, and residents and staff of assisted living facilities). Initial vaccine clinics provided by the Union County Health Department will be in partnerships with facilities and organizations within Union County that fit the1a criteria. The Union County Health Department continues to prepare to administer the first doses of vaccine as quickly as possible. UCHD hopes to hold initial vaccine clinics no later than Monday, Dec. 28 depending on when the vaccine arrives in Union County.
The initial vaccine supply is very limited. It will take time before the vaccine is available widely within the U.S. The U.S. is continuing to work to provide COVID-19 vaccination to any person who would like it. UCHD will continue to share information on vaccine availability at www.unioncountycovid.org.
