The hospitalization rate for reported cases among Union County residents continues to hover around 6%. The largest exposure source for reported infections continues to be direct contact with a person who has a known case of COVID-19. This exposure category makes up 45% of exposures within Union County.

School Reporting of Cases:

Per an Order from the Ohio Department of Health, schools are required to report any known case of COVID-19 to the local health department within 24 hours. Prior to the start of the school year, UCHD and our public and private schools had established a mechanism for reporting cases within a school setting. We will continue to follow this mechanism. The Union County Health Department is required to submit the data to the state of Ohio on a weekly basis. The State of Ohio will then make the data available on a public dashboard. Schools are also required to notify parents of affected students within 24 hours. This may be families within a given school building, classroom, or members of an extracurricular group. The Union County Health Department is working closely with our school partners to investigate reported cases and identify staff and students who are at high risk for exposure to COVID-19 due to a known case. Any individual determined to be at increased risk for infection will be notified by the local health department. With safety protocols layering protective measures such as social distancing, mask wearing, and cohorting of students where possible, the goal is to try and minimize the impact of a case of COVID-19 on the school body as much as possible.
